Impact of Work Life Balance on Employee Performance

It is a known fact that happy employees are 20% more productive than unhappy employees. Happiness is directly linked to productivity. More often than not, employees don’t feel that their work is valued at all. They feel less happy in the workplace for a myriad of reasons: they want to feel that what they do and who they are matters, that what they do has an impact on the company’s progress. Employers forget to understand that their employees’ job satisfaction is also related to happiness at work. The executives can be crucial in helping their employees achieve that work-life balance as well.

The conception of good quality of life doesn’t stop at work. It is a no-brainer that employees happiness impacts the success of an organization. If the employers embrace the importance of work-life balance, it incentivizes the employees to work harder and be more productive. Keep your employees well-engaged at work and you would notice that they would go above and beyond to make the company a success. As an employer, you might think that your worker is more productive if they put in more work hours but in reality, it might hamper their productivity in the long run.

Here are some ways the impact of work-life balance can be seen on employee performance:

Reducing stress, increasing productivity

Your workplace shouldn’t be the place for distress.

When the employees are well-engaged at work, it reduces stress and prevents burn out making them work harder. The co-workers are also engaged in the game to one-up each other at all times. If an organization focuses more on the quality of the work than the hours their employees put in it would create a healthier work culture.

Better mental health

Overworking is never advised.

Overworking can make you stressed impacting the mental well being of the employees. We work tirelessly at a job that we don’t like and continue to do so until it overcomes us and becomes a cause of mental distress. In order to avoid that, you need to take care of putting in those late work hours. Not only your mental well-being will impact your quality of work, but it would also affect your fellow workers. You would be less happy at work and your aspirations would take a hit. Your work would seem less interesting and monotonous. In contrast, when you are taking that much-needed break you would be happier.

Increase in the quality of output

While a late-night worker might seem like an efficient employee, it is actually affecting the overall output of the company. That employee would be more tired and take that stress home impacting his well being. It affects their social behavior both at work and at home.  A lot depends on the work culture of an organization. Most employers focus on instant results and productivity. They would exploit the limits of their working hours by incentivizing late working hours. But what they fail to realize is that in the longer run, employees’ productivity is actually falling and that would impact the quality of output.

Job satisfaction and organizational commitment

A satisfied employee is a loyal employee.

Employee engagement and job satisfaction influence the employees’ behavior towards the organization. They are more likely to stay and be loyal to their organization if they feel they can achieve their career goals and aspirations while balancing their work and personal life. We tend to work harder when we feel a connection with the goals and values of the organization. That is also the reason that people are moving out of their corporate towers into the much cozier co-working spaces of the start-ups. It provides them a work- culture that is not ghettoizing towards them.

So, look out for the signs of a potential burnout and incorporate healthy work-habits that would help you achieve that perfect work-life balance.
