Class of 2020: Oil and Gas Graduates, you’ve got this!

Dear Oil and Gas Graduates – Class of 2020,

We have not seen anything like this before and we understand it’s a lot to take in. With COVID 19 pandemic, the world has taken a dramatic turn. But to successfully respond to a situation, on which you have absolutely no control, you must pay attention.

Yes, the oil and gas industry has been hit hard, but it still stands tall and resilient. If you keep focusing on the job losses, layoffs, and bankruptcies, things wouldn’t get any better for you. When things change around us and there’s little we can do about it, we change ourselves to adjust to the new realities. With or without this crisis, this sector is known for its challenging environment, one that demands adaptability as a fundamental skill.

You’ve got to understand that there is a new playbook before you and as we speak, it is still being written. This is the time to learn, get creative, and work methodically towards your goals. All this free time during the lockdown is not for Netflix.

Oil and Gas graduates, focus on what matters.

What you learn during this crisis, will stay with you beyond these tough times. Learning is forever.

Learn About The Industry

Read about the developments that have shaped the oil and gas industry. Understand the road to energy transition. Look into the companies that are rebranding themselves to align with the new ground reality. Observe what their company culture looks like, what values do they believe in, what is their vision, and what skills are they looking for. With the great crew change, the industry is redefining its ways to welcome and embrace the younger generation. Dig into this wave of change and try to identify, what’s in it for you.

Build Your Network

“It’s a people’s business. A lot of it is dealt through handshakes, networking is extremely important in this industry. It’s all about who you know and not necessarily what you know. So, a lot of time and energy is focused on networking and bringing people together.”

   Justin Gauthier

During my conversation with Justin Gauthier, Oil and Gas Podcast Host at Oil and Gas Global Network (OGGN), and Account Manager at AES Drilling Fluids, he highlighted the power of a strong network in the industry, while describing his own career path. I am sure this interview will give you a wider perspective on building a career in oil and gas. Give it a read.

Strengthen Your Social Media Presence

In times of social distancing, social media is the most effective tool you have. For being visible, reaching out to people, and making an impact. With the oil and gas recruitment trends changing, hiring managers are looking at your social media profiles. And certainly, you wouldn’t want them to only glance at your daily activities and love for dogs. It’s important to understand that during these times, your social media profile – LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, can help others understand your professional interests and potential. There’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t leverage these platforms.

Work on Your Personal Brand

Once you recognize the fact that no resume or CV, no matter how best written and presented, can match your personal brand, you will do things differently. A strong personal brand is everything that makes you who you are. Your knowledge, your way of dressing up, your skills, communication abilities, vision, your approach to problems, and emotional intelligence – everything is a part of your brand. Your resume or CV can not reflect it all and this is why you need to prepare for the bigger picture – the FaceTime with the Recruiter. And then, the job role and your career itself.

Do Something That Matters

All jobs are not lost. It is possible that you might not land your dream job in that dream company. But, there are opportunities, you need to be aware and alert. The one thing that’s extremely fascinating about the world of oil and gas is that it is very diverse and even more, with energy transition. Apart from the hardcore technical jobs, you can also look for opportunities in business development, sales, marketing, and human resources. Think about a problem you would like to solve and then search for roles that can help you work on the solutions.
