The To-do list when interviewing with an Oil and Gas Start-up

The era of start-ups has taken the world by storm. And as millennials, you are given that pedestal to explore and learn with start-ups. As a fresher, you will always be nervous, unsure and sometimes just plain lost as to what should and shouldn’t you do when interviewing with an oil and gas start-up. Fret not, because this blog teaches you how to tackle all those questions.

What should you think of when you are starting off your career? Most often it is the 3 Cs that you should think of:

Compensation

How much will I earn?

 Career Growth

Will I get a good platform to grow?

 Culture

Would I fit into the work culture?

But be warned, all of them are mutually exclusive of the other. One will always be more important than the other at the end of the day, so you choose what suits your needs best at any given point.

When thinking about compensation, everyone wants to earn more, but there are high risks involved in wanting to earn more. The tried and tested method is to slowly climb the ladder. Hence if you are someone who wants to learn more and earn fairly well, then start-ups provide such an environment for you. You can go a step further and own shares in a start-up but that is a high-risk scenario, given that you could lose all your money.

Everyone wants a successful career, but it always comes at a price, you will have to choose from compensation or culture. As all things go you can’t have your cake and eat it too! But the plus side is, in a career of your choice oil and gas start-ups will generally give you a platform to learn, to make your mistakes, to make sure they guide you. When you choose a start-up to interview with you will have to ask some questions pertaining to yourself. The questions are as follows:

What will the remuneration be?

Who will be your mentor throughout your journey at the startup?

What will be your job role? (A tip here, the more you take upon roles, keeping your line of work as a priority the better for you to excel in the coming years)

How will this contribute to your career?

If all the above questions have a remotely positive answer, then you should always take the step.

Third and equally important is the culture of the start-up. This can be gauged by talking to the employees while you wait to be interviewed or plain old observing the employees of the company. This helps immensely in deciding if you would like to work in that start-up or not. They say a vibe or the energy of a workplace is absolutely important and a necessity. Gauging that energy is upon you. Always notice how the founders or the HR personnel talk to you. That will always help you understand if you are the right fit for that company or not.

In its entirety, it will always be a gamble as to what you should or shouldn’t do, how you should be when interviewing with a start-up. A start-up will always be your platform to do more, be more and most of all learn more, especially in the field of oil and gas. The industry is absolutely vast and intense for someone who doesn’t understand this you will have to be prepared to have life-altering yet absolutely worthy experience.
