There can be a point in your career where you feel that your true calling lies somewhere else. You joined the company as a Data Analyst but after a point of time, you begin to feel your interests lie in Operations. This is what we call a lateral move in career and it has its own perks. From learning new skills to a wider knowledge base, taking up a different role within the same company can help you grow both personally and professionally. How to ask for a transfer to another department can be a bit challenging but I have a few tips for you.
How to ask for a transfer to another department?
Schedule an appropriate time to talk
If your boss is involved in a major project or too many things are happening at work, it is definitely not the right time to talk about your transfer to another department. You need to choose a time when your boss can really listen and focus. Since it might come as a blow to your boss and he is not expecting this announcement, it’s important to table the discussion at the right time. Be honest and straightforward in your discussion and also give your boss space to put forth his views on this. After all, he is the one who would take a final call on your transfer and his feedback is valuable.
Express gratitude for a great experience
Before you discuss in detail about your desired role, convey to your boss how thankful you are for your present job role. Your inclination for changing your job role must not come across as a complaint. How your current work profile has helped you evolve and grow is important to acknowledge yourself and say to your boss. You can also express your desire to continue working in your current role perhaps as a cross-collaboration with your new team.
Offer to train the next candidate for your role
If you have decided to move on to a new role, somebody will have to take your place. Since your boss was not prepared for your replacement, you must offer help to train the new candidate. Try to make your manager’s life easy by taking up this responsibility.
Say why you are the best candidate
Most importantly, you need to give strong reasons to your boss for why you are the best fit for the new role you have in mind. For this, you need to be fully confident about it yourself. You must have given it enough thought, consideration, and time. Let your boss know that while you were entirely present in your current job role, you trained yourself for the desired profile extremely well. And since your heart was already into it, time management was not a constraint.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking up a different role in your organization. But yes, be mindful of your boss’s views and feelings in the process. Youd definitely wouldn’t want to spoil an otherwise strong relationship. When you have the potential to do justice to your job, do it in all ways and from all aspects.
