Schlumberger’s contribution to Human Rights protection

Apart from establishing a landmark in the oil and gas industry, Schlumberger is sincerely committed towards human rights protection. This oil major has been conducting its business activities in a manner that preserves and respects human dignity. In perfect harmony with the International Bill of Human Rights, Schlumberger respects the principles that address the impacts on community, supply chain management, and employment practices. All their activities incorporate the grave concerns of slavery, child labor, non-discrimination, freedom of association, workplace health, and employment conditions at work place.

Schlumberger’s “The Blue Print in Action – Our Code of Conduct” reflects its recognition of the UN Guiding Principles. Since its establishment, the firm has maintained that it will comply with the laws, rules, and regulations of the countries in which they operate. In doing so, Schlumberger does not engage in discrimination based on race, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, religion, union membership, or marital status in hiring and employment practices such as promotions, rewards, and access to training. Any form of forced labor, slavery or human trafficking is strictly prohibited by Schlumberger in its contractual arrangements.

Taking a giant leap forward and to ensure the respect of human rights and the progression of sustainable development, Schlumberger has aligned its Global Stewardship program with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The idea of sustainable development drives Schlumberger’s respect towards the local communities. The company works with its customers and suppliers towards creating shared values for aligning responsibilities on human rights issues.

Amidst the backdrop of climate change, Schlumberger is sincerely working towards creating a strong environmental framework for its projects. Their projects have a large social footprint and they effectively implement Social and Environmental Management Standard. This framework assesses and manages their local impacts and ensures that we respect the individual rights and groups in the community.

Security of its employees is also a priority as some of the firm’s operations take place in dangerous areas. Without infringing on the human rights of others, Schlumberger is committed to providing optimum protection for their employees and assets.

Recognizing the fact that there are serious human rights abuses associated with extraction, transportation and trade of minerals, Schlumberger has always supported responsible sourcing of materials from suppliers. The firm avoids any conflict in the sourcing activity.

With these initiatives, Schlumberger is certainly furthering the idea of sustainable development and is leading other oil and gas companies by example.
