What is life without challenges? What is a career after all, if it is way too comfortable? How would you get a chance to push your limits or test your potential? How would you identify your strengths and weaknesses? The idea of having a successful career no more remains confined to a 9 to 5 secure job with a handsome package. Does it? Risks and rewards. Challenges and opportunities. Perks and potential. Difficult and comforting. Responsibilities and freedom. A great career reflects all of these and much more. A role that is promising and helps you evolve into a strong professional. Let’s see what the oilfield jobs have in store for you.

“While most of the oilfield jobs are very physical and demanding in nature, a lot of the oil and gas companies go out of their way and go the extra mile to make sure that their worker’s time that was spent on-board is an experience worth remembering.” – Oilfield Worker

Challenges in Oilfield Jobs: An Overview

Intense Working Hours

12-hour shifts for 21 days straight in a row – that’s oilfield jobs for you. Adding to it, you won’t be working in a comfortable cabin. Intense physical labour and mental strength are required for these highly demanding jobs. Why so intense, you would want to know. Time is money on the oilfield. Non-Performing Time is taken very seriously on the rig and is considered a huge loss. Even when there is equipment failure and workers are unable to work, the non-performing time only adds up.

During your work routine of 21 days, you cannot see your family or friends, no matter what the occasion. While working in remote locations, you will be completely disconnected from the outside world.

There are times when oilfield workers are working non-stop, in case of multiple jobs or when enough personnel are not available. This is why ‘flexibility’ is the most important attribute while on oilfield jobs.

Unfavourable Climatic Conditions

The show must go on. In good or bad weather.

Oilfield workers work in harsh and challenging weather conditions, in far-off lands, at a great height, or offshore. Physical strength and the body’s ability to cope up with the different climatic conditions is very much taken into account. Also, oilfield jobs require a lot of travelling. The climate varies accordingly and you must be mentally prepared to adjust to the changing environment.

Safety Concerns

Safety is a huge concern in the oil and gas industry. One mistake can turn around things unimaginably. From the Personal Protective Equipment to understanding the technical know-how in detail, oil field workers have to be extremely careful. In a blink of an eye, things can go terribly wrong. There is no scope for confusion and carelessness, particularly when there are hazards unique to the oil and gas industry.

Work Pressure

On the oilfield, one mistake can cost your job or LIFE.

Oilfield workers need to be constantly alert to their surroundings and not just their own tasks but also what’s happening around them. Anything off-track must be immediately reported to the supervisors or management.  Further, if you are not technically sound, you are a risk to everyone. There is immense pressure to not make any mistake. Oilfield jobs are about knowing the entire picture and you can’t work in silos. These jobs require a strong team effort and an eye for details.
