Destec’s Desalign Flange: Making Subsea Pipe Connections Easier

In some of the most hostile subsea blocks, it is a challenge to connect pipes with misalignment. With uneven seabed’s, pipes being dislodged, and pipe defects, there is a need to connect misaligned pipes in an efficient and cost-effective manner. With higher line pressures this has not always been possible. Thus, it imposes a serious operational threat on operators and leads to inefficiency.

Many oil and gas companies have tried to find a solution to this problem, but none of them could do it better than Destec. This article talks about an innovative solution by Destec that has made it easier to connect pipes on uneven seabed’s.

 Desalign Flange by Destec

Established in 1969, Destec Engineering is a leading provider of pipe connectors, with expertise in ‘High-Pressure Containment’ and ‘On-Site Machining’.

Destec has an in-house facility of designing and manufacturing a wide variety of portable machine tools which are in demand globally and can successfully undertake on-site machining operations.

Destec Engineering has been designing and manufacturing products for the oil, gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries for over 50 years. As a consistent innovator in the industry, Destec has a new product for subsea misalignment applications; the Desalign Compact Flange.

Staying true to its reputation in the global market, the company has introduced a compact, lightweight pipe connector, rated up to 1500lbs, which is also piggable in both directions and will allow up to 5 degrees of misalignment. Through research by its R&D department and analysing the demand from the Norwegian oil and gas sector, Destec came to the conclusion that there is nothing that comes close to its Desalign Flange in the industry.

The Desalign Flange will mate with Destec’s standard Compact Flange, with a size range from 2″ to 24″. However, it can also be used for topside applications if needed. Key to the compact design is Destec’s Seal Ring. The basic principle of all Destec’s connectors is to seal as close to the bore of the joint as possible, whilst retaining a reliable and accommodating product.

Destec manufactures in-house to ensure high-quality standards are controlled. The firm also offers an on-site machining service which equals its competitors. Its on-site team is there for machining its products offshore to maximize the production of the platforms. The organization can also machine API, ANSI, NORSOK and other types of flanges. Some of the recent machining projects Destec has been involved in have taken it into hostile and challenging environments throughout the world, but the company always maintains its quality.

Flanges enhancing operational efficiency

Having Lloyd’s Type Approval, and achieving weight savings of up to 75%, the Compact Flange is found to be one of the best solutions for high pressure, subsea applications. It is in demand by many companies in the industry for their projects. Major projects of which the Destec Compact Flange has been a part of throughout the world includes the CATS pipeline, BP Quad 204, FPSO Kikeh, PVEP POC Platforms, and Ekofisk 2, to name but a few. The company’s product range is not only being used in subsea and topside connectors but also in military, aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear and power industry equipment with bore sizes from 13mm to 2700mm.

With a highly experienced design team, Destec is on a continuous endeavour to provide the best solution to the industry. Contact team Destec to know more.
