Can the company size affect your career?

How do you know what company size is right for you? Does the company size really matter in your career path? There are various dimensions to this and we shall explore them in this article.

The perks of working in a Small Company Size Enterprise

Small Team doing Big Things

From getting the job to gaining a sense of job security, things work differently in small establishments. The Chief Executive of  Small Business Trends, Anita Campbell says that “the chances are landing a job at a small business is going to be a much quicker process. On the other hand, in the large corporates, it is not unusual to go through 5-10 interview rounds before you are actually hired.

With lesser bureaucratic control, organizational and complex structure, small company size establishments allow more room for growth. It becomes easier to identify who is actually making a difference in the organizational hierarchy.

You will be able to build personal relationships with almost everyone in a small company – from the receptionist to the boss. A family away from home can be found in small-sized companies. The more you get to know your colleagues, the easier it becomes at times to navigate your way in work with them.

Employees are empowered to wear more hats while working with small company size businesses. You can never be confined to one role and there are no limitations to your learning curve. For instance, an employee in the creative team can very well move into business development or marketing. A small company size offers you a much wider exposure to different job roles.

With fewer rules and more flexibility, better working conditions are offered by small company size businesses. The small companies understand that they can’t offer as many benefits as the large corporates and thus, they even go out of their way sometimes, just to make sure that the employees are happy with the work culture and environment.

Employees tend to develop a strong sense of belonging with small companies. The job security increases greatly at a small company size establishment because you are considered an integral part of that family and letting you go is not easy.

The Benefits of Working with a Large Company Size Establishment

Big Companies reflecting Great Potential

Abundant opportunities await you in large corporates. Large companies have been there for a long time and they already have a structure in place to help you move up the career ladder.  Further, a large company size business will offer you the chance to specialize. You will be able to more fully develop a particular area of expertise or job role.

Generally speaking, large companies have more resources. This could mean more or better office infrastructure, training and professional development, compensation and benefits, and more conducive work culture. With respect to budget or administrative support, this could mean more resources for your particular job.

In a large company size business, you have greater potential for internal mobility. Larger infrastructure, more office locations and you have the chance to move from the Shanghai office to California office, from managing media to business development or marketing.

Being associated with a big brand name has its own advantages. When people glance at your resume and see you have worked with Ogilvy (as opposed to Achilles Media WHO?), they know what they are dealing with. Big brands have their own value and cannot be undermined in this competitive world.

Where do the medium company size businesses fall?

Empowering the Employees

Medium-sized companies fall somewhere between the small companies and large corporates. In their overall outlook, these companies do reflect greater similarities to small companies. For instance, greater flexibility, more opportunities to grow, diverse job roles and so on. Adding to these, medium-sized companies offer greater cultural and business diversity. An enhanced international experience and cultural knowledge empower the employees to identify successful opportunities.

Both ends of the Company Size spectrum

As you begin with your job search and the interviews, understand that there are both pros and cons of working with small and large companies.

There is no right answer when it comes to deciding an ideal company size. Thus, it is extremely important to take out time to reflect on your personal and professional priorities to understand which space might be better for your career path.
