Ever pondered about the offshore working conditions or the safety and welfare of the engineers employed for the same? In addition to looking out for one another, there are innumerable security measures taken by the petroleum engineers working offshore! The BOSIET (basic offshore and safety induction and emergency training) course is one of the primary programs taken by them. It helps to gain basic knowledge about safety measures required for offshore installations and understanding emergency transits if something gets out of hands.
What is a BOSIET Course?
The BOSIET course is one of the foundation emergency training taken by the delegates who work at the offshore facilities or are about to join any offshore vessels, the course is a basic one and takes three days to complete. The course covers the following aspects:
The program commences with Safety Inductions. The BOSIET course deals with the mandatory steps that a recruit is expected to follow while working offshore. It helps in the identification of the main offshore hazards and their consequences. In addition to that, it briefs about the principles of managing safety on offshore installations, the necessary medications required while working as well as about the role of an offshore medic. Lastly, this section of the BOSIET course enlists instructions on how to react in case of fire, accidents based on disposal systems, or drug and alcohol abuse.
Moving on to the second step, which is about emergency training for safety and escaping. This aspect of the BOSIET course covers the training like how to use a helicopter for emergency purposes, how to use breathing apparatus, and how to help crew members in case of any perilous situation. It involves the teaching of self-rescue techniques with a smoke hood from areas where visibility is completely obscured and small group escape plans from areas with partial visibility due to smoke.
The third feature of the BOSIET course is sea survival, it covers instructions and training about how to leave and abandon the offshore drill in a critical situation. Fitting of a helicopter strop and correctly boarding a marine liferaft from the water with a perfect posture are some of the basic skills covered in this particular aspect. It also includes guidelines about how to survive in the sea for a respectable period in case of predicaments like the late arrival of the rescue operators.
The fourth point covered by the course is Fire-fighting and Self-rescue. The former includes basic knowledge about operating hoses and fire-extinguishers. This part of the BOSIET course teaches escaping from life-threatening situations like through a window opening of a partially submerged helicopter or a faulty aircraft! Also, it covers the individual safety measures in case of reduced sight to smoke. Lastly, it is expected from the workers to investigate and deduce the cause of the fire.
Duration of the BOSIET course
Offshore job is an amalgamation of long working hours and a great deal of labour. BOSIET course is just the first step towards offshore survival. It offers theoretical as well as practical applications that can be understood and applied by the worker in a real-life situation. There are some prerequisites necessary to take the course like the participants should be at least 16 years of age and must pass all the medical tests conducted before entering the BOSIET course. This emergency training course is offered in all the countries and takes three days to complete. The total hours to complete the course comes to around 22.5 hours. A certificate is issued in the name of the person upon completion. The validity of the certification is for four years, after that, an individual is supposed to go for a recapitulation /refresher course that takes one day to complete. If someone fails to do so, they are expected to repeat the entire BOSIET course to continue working on the site.
