Geothermal Energy – The Next Big Thing in Energy

Geothermal energy is a renewable, non-carbon source of energy. The earth’s temperature can be controlled by geothermal activity. It has been used for bathing and cooking since the Paleolithic age. The earliest known spa is a stone pool on the Lisan mountain in China, constructed in the third century BCE at the site of the Huaqing Chi palace. The Romans began using geothermal energy in the 1st century CE after conquering the city of Aquae Sulis. In the 1960s, the first commercial geothermal power plant was built in the United States, which today has more than 60 geothermal power plants.

Geothermal energy can be found anywhere on the Earth. Milder temperatures can be found ten to several hundred feet below the surface. This heat can be directly used for direct heating. Some scientists believe that the ground beneath your backyard can produce enough heat to regulate climate. The energy can be harnessed to provide power to homes, buildings, and cities. The geothermal industry has been in a slow but steady growth since the 2010s, when a flurry of capital and binary power plants began to sprout up. As capital dried up, however, the industry’s popularity fell off and attention focused on other areas.

Some geothermal fields produce steam. The two main geothermal fields used today are Larderello in Italy, and Geysers in California. Other geothermal fields exist in Mexico, Indonesia, and Japan. Most geothermal fields generate hot water and steam or hot water alone. All three types are viable sources of electricity. The most common form of this energy is derived from the conversion of very hot water into steam.

As more oil and gas technology advances, geothermal will become more prevalent in the next decade. The heat from the ground is inexhaustible, dispatchable, and flexible. A renewable energy source, geothermal has the potential to make us billionaires. The new generation of companies is advancing the technology, and they’ve got people excited about the future. This technology is the next big thing in energy. There are many more startups in the pipeline.

The most common type of geothermal power plants are flash steam and dry steam. A flash steam power plant is more efficient than a dry steam model and operates on highly-pressured underground reservoirs. A flash steam plant is operated on a hot spring to collect hot water. It vaporizes and then releases the steam. The water is pumped back into the hydrothermal reservoir. If it is superheated enough, the geothermal system will generate enough electricity for the entire nation.

The emergence of super-hot geothermal systems has benefited many countries and developed the industry in many other countries. They are capable of generating electricity for the world, but have been limited to specialized areas. Some geothermal power plants are already available in a wide variety of locations. Some of these sites are also accessible to the general public. There are even some remote geothermal power plant projects. So, if you’re interested in building a geothermal plant, consider it.
