Fight or flight? The usual emotional state when experiencing a risk or challenge. Most people look forward to a new phase with joy and there are some who are anxious. Both emotions are natural. And then there is fear of new job.
Fear of looking stupid at the new workplace? Fear of not fitting in? Fear of this and fear of that. Let me reassure you that it is all natural and it happens. Settling into a new job arrives with its own apprehensions along with all the excitement.
You are simply nervous about new job
When I talk to people about their emotions and experiences before starting a new job, I usually get a mixed response. But what is common in their response is the element of fear. The origin lies in nervousness. About a new workplace, new people, new job responsibilities.
Another way of looking at it.
“I think it’s glorious to be nervous. Being nervous is great! How often do we get nervous on a daily basis? Being slightly nervous means you care, and you’re alive, and you’re taking some kind of risk.”
Here’s how you can overcome the fear of new job
Develop a growth mindset
You really need not prove to anyone how smart you are. So no wasting time in impressing anyone. Focus on all the things that you can learn at the new job. Talk to people at the workplace and do not miss any opportunity to learn something new from them.
Think what could go right
At times, we are highly obsessed with negative emotions. The sole focus shifts on all that could go wrong. How about thinking about things that could go right. Your new job offers numerous possibilities. Focus on exploring these possibilities to overcome the fear of new job.
Get over the impostor syndrome
Well, if you are thinking all the while, that probably you are not good enough. You are not capable of doing things that others trust you with. Perhaps, you are investing too much time in yourself. Give it a break. The truth is you are not the only person in a complex system. Any outcome comes from shared interactions and efforts. Every employee in an organization is good with something or the other. Think about the contributions you can make.
Look at the bigger picture
This is something I talk about with everyone who’s stepping into a new job. Only thinking about the immediate benefits and perks is not how you can build a strong professional identity. You really have to believe enough in something to work towards it. Before anything else, think about the organizational vision and goals. Are you convinced and do you see yourself growing there? An integral part of overcoming the fear of new job is this.

“Even if you go for it and it doesn’t work out, you still win. You still had the guts enough to head straight into something that frightened you. That type of bravery will take you places.”
