Skills on Resume

All about putting the Right Skills on Resume

Interviewing for a job is always nerve-wracking. But what’s even more difficult is putting down the right skills on resume.

The ones that will make the potential employer hire you. The right skills on resume have to be exactly as per the job description. Writing about your extensive artistic skills when interviewing for the position of a receptionist is not the best idea!

What is a skill?

Skill is an ability or a talent that lets you get the work done. And all employers and companies want the job well-done, well-done being the operative word here!

There are two kinds of skills that hiring managers or HR personnel look for- Hard skills and Soft skills.

Hard Skills

Hard skills are the technical skills and abilities to get the job done. Example: if you apply to be a driver in a company, then driving is the main hard skill you require. Some examples of hard skills are listed below

  • Copywriting
  • Data analysis
  • Foreign languages
  • Accounting
  • Computer Languages
  • Bookkeeping
  • Mathematics
  • Event Planning

Soft Skills

Soft Skills are usually referred to the interpersonal skills. These skills are harder to portray or show because they are intangible. These skills can only be shown a period of time and not immediately and more importantly, it is inherent. Some skills are listed below

  • Teamwork
  • Conflict resolution
  • Adaptability
  • Creativity
  • Time management
  • Decision Making
  • Self-motivation

More often than not, a lot of candidates are qualified for the job but they still do not get accepted. Because they do not have some soft skills. Now that you have an idea of what skills are needed in your resume, let’s answer the question of which skills to put on the resume. An employer will always look for an individual who has “teamwork” and “leadership” skills. These skills besides the hard skills add value to your resume. It is estimated that around 78% of employers look for both of these skills in one individual.

In a broader perspective, skills have to be listed as per the requirement of the job. You should always start with your best skill and then talk about the less stronger skill. Sometimes you can even skip putting in some skills, which are not appropriate to the job.

In the oil and gas industry, you definitely need more hard skills than soft but do not forget the hard skills are always complimented by the soft skills. Most employers will be satisfied that not only are you technically sound but you do know how to manage a team or how to communicate the task at hand. This also helps in securing a promotion or being able to excel more at your jobs than the others. Skills are always a necessity when it comes to any job. Always be sure of your skills, if you lack any skills, brush up, ask questions, be better for yourself.
