Adani Group, one of India’s leading business syndicates, was established in the year 1988. Since its inception, Adani has laid down a concrete framework for integration and has grown to acquire the status of an international integrated infrastructure player, with expertise in key industry verticals like resources, logistics, energy and agro. The firm has welcomed the role of corporate social responsibility in business ethics.
As ‘corporate social responsibility’ is redefining the growth strategy of commercial operations, Adani Group has aligned its vision and aspirations with the greater good of the community. The following activities have been taken up by the group to implement the vision of CSR for sustainable and inclusive development:
- Environment: The UNFCCC has acknowledged one of the major initiatives of Adani Group – It is the first Indian power company to use ‘supercritical’ technology to cut down carbon dioxide emissions. The Clean Development Certification was awarded to the company for the same in the year 2009. (Can mention the year when it was awarded, if it’s available.) Recognizing the major challenges in the growing energy demands of the nation and its impact on the environment, the company has taken up some wonderful initiatives for environment protection:
- Across various locations on the Gujarat coast, ‘Mangrove Afforestation’ has been taken up. Working in close association with the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Bhuj (Gujarat), and Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC), the Horticulture Department of Adani has successfully conducted the entire afforestation activity. The Saline Area Vitalization Enterprise Ltd. (SAVE) has greatly assisted the company in its efforts from inception to completion from June 2006 to March 2017.
- Millions of trees and shrubs have been planted with a success rate of over 90% across the company’s locations in India. Adani has not hesitated in taking up the challenge of plantation in extremely arid and saline conditions with the help of treated STP water in irrigation and manure enriched with treated sludge.
- Adani can take pride in being the first business enterprise in the coal mining industry to employ a transplanting machine in India. The objective is to conserve the local ecology in the mining region by transplanting the trees. More than 5500 trees have been transplanted under this initiative.
- The horticulture experts at the in-house nursery in Adani’s Chattisgarh location have taken up the regeneration of Shorea Robusta (Sal), which includes the complete process from flower collection to seeding to hardening and then sapling preparations. The final product is a healthy Sal tree. Local environment bodies have appreciated this initiative as it is adding immense value in the protection of native species.
- With the prime motive of becoming a ‘zero waste’ enterprise, all the waste is appropriately segregated and sent for recycling or to ancillary industry for co-processing. During the year 2016-17, their Mundra (Gujarat) location alone handled 304 MT of hazardous and 268 MT of non-hazardous waste.
- Water treatment plants are operated for both, domestic and effluent water at Mundra, Gujarat and Sarguja, Chattisgarh. Further, the treated water finds application in horticulture.
- Soil enriching vermin-compost is created with all the organic waste across major locations. This also includes use of industry byproducts like Flyash, that has shown innovative results such as reduced levels of contaminants and higher nutrition that allows one to enrich soil without the use of artificial fertilizers.
- Adani Foundation: The idea of this foundation is to execute the company’s sincere commitments towards the society. Through the Adani Foundation, the group invests around 3% of its profits in community-centric efforts such as,
- Education
- Community Health
- Sustainable Livelihood
- Rural Infrastructure
- Safety: In sync with the international safety standards, the group has designed an ‘Occupational Health and Safety Policy’ and a ‘Safety Policy’. The legal requirements have also been identified. The group has received many awards for its safety initiatives.
Through these CSR projects, Adani Group has earned a reputation as an environmentally and socially sensitive enterprise. These investments are critical and will go a long way in redefining the meaning and essence of corporate culture and economics.
