With some companies announcing layoffs and others shying away from hiring new people at this time, we understand the concerns that cloud your mind. Should I keep looking for jobs or put it on hold for some time? Who would hire me now? I need a job. Where do I look for oil and gas jobs? How do I prepare myself? The corona outbreak has left us all in a state of ambiguity and till things get back to normal, we all got to keep up with the changing times. It is quite natural to have these doubts but dwelling upon them would only add to your worries and anxiety. In these times, there’s one thing that I would really like to stress upon – This time ain’t coming back.
Trust me, there couldn’t be a better time for connecting with people and building relationships. Networking is an integral part of job search strategy. All the jobs that you are looking for are not necessarily on a job portal. One fine day, a person you connected with recently, might offer you a job that you really want. Who knows? It’s a small, small world. While sitting at home during the days of social distancing, social media is keeping us connected, all the more. Instead of mindlessly scrolling your social media feed, this is the time to be on LinkedIn and proactively connect with relevant people. And if you do not have a profile on LinkedIn, this is the time to create one. Without a doubt, LinkedIn is a great platform to reach out to people. Personally, I have connected with some of the most amazing people in the oil and gas industry via LinkedIn.
From updating your resume to improving your social media presence, everything is a part of your personal brand. The more you work on it, the more your chances of finding the right opportunities will increase. Your search for oil and gas jobs is not merely limited to your qualifications, skills, and applications. There are thousands who apply for jobs every day in the industry but not everyone gets to be there. Think of what makes you the right fit for a particular role, what are the qualities that help you stand out from the crowd, and where do you wish to see yourself in your career. From your resume to your social media profiles and your interaction with the hiring managers, your personal brand should come out strong.
Oh, you cannot afford to be lazy. Your movement is restricted, not your capabilities. Take up all the courses you have been planning to pursue all the while. Learn a new language or perhaps the power of emotional intelligence at the workplace. You have the time, you got to make the most of it. Udemy, Coursera, Energy Dais – choose any platform you prefer but leave no room for procrastination. This is your time to develop new skills and prepare for an industry that is changing so rapidly. Nobody got anywhere while sitting on the couch, after all!

Till the time we all work remotely, companies would be interviewing candidates virtually. Corona outbreak has put the spotlight on digital and virtual interviews are a major transition from the face-to-face meetings. Get comfortable on the camera and do some mock interviews. Ask your friends and mentors to help you prepare well. I am sure they all would want to pitch in. These are tough times and it’s amazing to see how people are ready to help with whatever they can. Try Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, or Whatsapp Video Calling.
Adapting to this new environment is the best strategy for your oil and gas jobs search at the moment. Look at the brighter side and make the most of your quarantine days. Stay safe and take care!
