A sucker rod is a steel rod with threaded ends that is used in the oil industry to connect the surface and down hole components of a reciprocating piston pump installed in an oil well. It is usually between 25 and 30 feet (7 to 9 metres) in length. The pump jack is the well’s pump visible above-ground drive, connected to the down hole pump at the well’s bottom by a set of interconnected sucker rods. Sucker rods are also available in fiberglass and in lengths of 37 1/2 feet with diameters of 3/4, 7/8, 1, and 1 1/4 inches because this will determine how much power it has to push a well. These have metallic threaded ends on one end and female threaded ends on the other.
Function of a sucker rod:
The surface unit distributes energy from the prime mover to the sucker rod string to pump the well. It must do so by changing the prime-rotational mover’s motion to a reciprocating motion for the sucker rod. It must also reduce the prime-speed’s mover to a pumping speed that is appropriate. A gear reducer is used to reduce the speed, and a walking beam is used to transform the rotating motion of the crankshaft to an oscillatory motion. By use of a pitman arm, the crank arm is attached to the walking beam. A Samson post and saddle bearing support the walking beam. The horse head and bridle are employed to keep the pull on the sucker rod string vertical at all times, preventing any bearing movement on the part of the sucker rod string above the stuffing box. To keep a good liquid seal at the surface, the polished rod and stuffing box combination are used.
