“Why should we hire you?” is probably the most difficult question asked in not just an oil and gas interview but in any interview.
It is also probably one of the most common questions asked in any interview. This question is difficult because it holds the potential to determine your chances of selection. In your response to “why should we hire you?”, lies a great opportunity to express what makes you the best fit for the role. You can talk about your experience, your skills, how you fit in the organizational culture, and everything in between in a much empowered way.
If you look at the bright spots, this question is your key to taking your place in the dream company.
Before you prepare yourself for the response, identify what is for you in it and for the employer.
It is important to convey to your potential employer that you have the right skill set for the position. During the conversation, make sure that you talk about yourself. Your skills, experience, and expertise. Most of the candidates tend to just talk about the benefits for the employer.
Help them understand what is in it for you because that would keep you inspired and motivated on the job. This is a quality most of the hiring managers across the oil and gas industry are looking for.
The main question is “Why should we choose you over others?”. The recruiters across the table would not put this question directly but this is exactly what they want to know. What is the unique element you bring on the table? What makes you a better candidate than others?
If you have already talked about your professional experience and skills, a better way to approach this question would be to present yourself as a company expert. Before the interview, try to study the company in detail and show the recruiters that you have deep knowledge of their business. Since you are competing against candidates who are similarly qualified, something that can set you apart is your dedication towards the role and the organization.
Employers would love to have someone on board who makes them believe that he or she is “one of them”. Let them know that you are excited about the role and it would be easier for them to train you over others.
Every organization has a set of challenges and employers are always looking for solution-oriented people. Employees who keep their calm in all situations and come up with ideas to solve even the most complex problems.
While answering this question, you can highlight a past experience where you solved a problem or challenge. You need not stretch your answer and get into too much detail. Just a brief conversation can help the recruiter understand that you are a team player and an individual with a forward-looking approach. Someone who arrives at solutions rather than complaining about the problems.
