Relocating for work isn’t easy. It’s a change of scenery for sure but more than that it’s painful. It can be very overwhelming to move to a new city and feel settled at once. There is a lot involved in job relocation than just moving boxes to a new city. Most people readily join the company even if it means relocating for work but don’t realise that they can negotiate with their company for some assistance. Don’t be shy to ask for any assistance or compensation.
Most of the people don’t have what they want because either they don’t know what they want or they were too shy to ask. Know what kind of assistance you would need in relocating for work. When you think of relocating for work think beyond negotiating for financial assistance.
Sit with the HR department and find out what help can the company provide when you are relocating for work. If somebody in your office has recently relocated, ask them the kind of assistance the company offered them. Ask your other professional contacts about the company benefits they got when they began the process of relocating for work. Having said that, each company is different. Larger companies have policies in place for relocation. You need to learn about how your company can assist you and negotiate accordingly.
Your employer would hear you if you made a realistic demand when it comes to relocating for work. Be sure to make a genuine request that benefits both parties. Before you decide what you ask for, assess all the factors beforehand.
Before joining when everything is finalised, ask your employer for some time off to do some house-hunting. Once you join, it would be difficult to take some time out for house-hunting. If you are a family person, you would want to have a house before you relocate your family. Some larger companies have living arrangements for their employees, ask for a temporary living arrangement in the employees’ residential complexes.
Whatever your company agrees to promise you as compensation for your relocation, get it in writing. Get a detailed signed letter from your HR or your employer to make the transition go smoother.
Some companies also offer a temporary living arrangement in a hotel and bear all your expenses until you have completely settled at your new place. So, until you find your own place and to get used to the new city that you are relocating for work, it’s important to have a temporary living arrangement. You also need a place to stay before all your necessary packages have arrived.
You should try to be as organised as possible and make the transition hassle-free. It never hurts to involve your company in the relocation part of your job. They would try to be as accommodating and make you feel more welcomed. Have a relaxed conversation about relocating for work and you would feel less anxious about moving to a new place for work.
