Isn’t it natural to go a little berserk when a new chapter begins? For instance, a new job. Am I qualified for the role? I hope I didn’t fool them into hiring me. Did I? Would I fit in the new workplace and culture? Will my colleagues like me? Am I sure about this? Well, we all have similar experiences and insane thoughts because the brain works in mysterious ways. Settling into a new job with such thoughts can only get more difficult.
Oh, the impostor syndrome and how it kills the enthusiasm!
Am I good enough for this role? I might have the qualifications but I don’t feel I have the skills. Wait, did I fool them into hiring me? Should I talk to them again?
It couldn’t get any crazier and self-doubt begins to multiply. Remember, when you have these thoughts, you are simply nervous about new job. You cleared the interviews and the tests. There were no lies in your resume and you made an impact on the management. You deserve to be here.
You start feeling like a 10-year-old again. You begin to look back to your old job and how you were the mastermind behind every great project. And here, you are being schooled. It makes you feel that you know nothing.
Let me assure you that this is farther from the truth. You know a lot and you will learn much more at the new job. You are simply nervous about new job and pretty overwhelmed with new responsibilities. Take a deep breath and take it easy.
Nostalgia hits hard.
Do I fit in here? Will I be able to build strong work relationships? I don’t they like me. They don’t seem eager to talk to me. Oh, I miss my old office and colleagues.
People do not even know you enough at the moment to like or dislike you. Give them some time. Give yourself some time. All these crazy thoughts, only because you are nervous about new job.
“You’re not going to die. Here’s the white-hot truth: if you go bankrupt, you’ll still be okay. If you lose the gig, the lover, the house, you’ll still be okay. If you sing off-key, get beat by the competition, have your heart shattered, get fired…it’s not going to kill you. Ask anyone who’s been through it.”
And this is just a new job. Take a deep breath. Go easy on yourself. A promising future awaits you!
