4 Things to Avoid Making Mistakes At New Job

Doesn’t matter if you are fresh out of college or starting a new job position in a company. You might still get cold feet and the nervousness might overwhelm you. Even if you ace at the job skill and your interview went really well, you might make some mistakes at your new job. It is a learning curve and you do not necessarily know everything there is to know about your job.

Are you wondering if anyone else screws up or make mistakes?  Making mistakes at new job is pretty common. Yes, everyone makes mistakes and it is not because you are bad at your job, sometimes the anxiety gets the best of you.

Here is how you can avoid making mistakes at new job:

Showing up late

Showing up late

It can be the biggest turn off for your employer if she sees that you did not value their time and showed up late on your first day at work.

Avoid making assumptions

Ask the dumb questions

Another mistake people often make is not asking for help. Avoid making assumptions about your task. Ask the “dumb” questions. Don’t be too quick to prove yourself, you would get plenty of opportunities. Listen to your teammates, see what they have been doing until now. Understand their ways first before pointing out their mistakes and suggesting new ideas. Always be on your toes but don’t step on anyone’s toes either. You are probably hired to bring fresh perspectives to the team. You might also know in and out of the work that you do but it is always advised to ask as many questions as possible about the task assigned. Ask for the required training if you have to, just don’t assume.

Hiding your mistakes

Admit your mistakes if you have made any. Avoid making excuses for yourself, clearly, state what the mistake was. Express how you realize the impact of your mistake. Say what you’re going to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Your employer would most probably be empathetic to your learning curve. Hand holding is frowned upon in the modern work culture and you are expected to deliver from the first day. One Redditor suggested this great idea which I also follow is keeping checklists – if there isn’t already a step by step guide to everything then make one for yourself. They are a great way to avoid making mistakes at new job. Create deadlines for yourself and schedule your tasks in a way that high priority tasks rank higher in your schedule.

Make checklists

Walk before you can run

It is probably your second job and you might think that the task assigned is beneath your station. Do it anyway and do it well without frowning. Before you dive right into new experiences, you need to dip your toes in the water. Your employer might also be testing your skills before they give you any important assignments. Again, you would get plenty of chances to prove your worth but be patient.

The new job can be daunting for both the fresh graduate and employee in a new job position. Making mistakes at new job is something you cannot really avoid. Mistakes are going to happen. Make sure you absorb all of that like a sponge and make the transition for you as smooth as possible. Being diligent and sincere are the most rewarded values in the workplace. Even if you are slow to learn your employer shall take time to train you.

Avoid these mistakes and you are good to go, don’t be so anxious about your new job!
