Feeling guilty about quitting your job? Here’s why you shouldn’t

Guilt is infamous for sucking out the joy from the best of things. And it arrives exactly at the moment when you have already made up your mind about something – be it your personal or professional life. So if you have not been happy with your job for quite some time, decided to quit, and now feeling guilty about it, let me tell you, it is very natural. But what I would like to discuss with you is that there’s absolutely no need to feel guilty about quitting your job.

Here’s why you shouldn’t feel guilty about quitting your job

Staying out of guilt helps no one

If you try to stay back at a job that doesn’t make you happy, only because you are guilty about leaving the organization, it would just make things terrible. I understand that you are thinking about the opportunities you explored here, how your learning curve went on a rise, and how wonderfully you evolved as a professional. But ask yourself honestly if you will be able to focus and be productive in such a situation. Wouldn’t your boss notice the low enthusiasm and drive? Remember, you are not doing anyone a favour by staying back. For an individual to be inspired at work, it takes a lot. It is not simply about clocking in your 8 hours. If you have to drag yourself to work each day, it explains enough. Why make it worse?

The Company will not fall apart

You have been a star performer and you felt important. Everyone liked you and looked up to you for any help. Certainly, it is amazing when you feel that you are running the show. But is any organization a one man show? No, it is not. The show will go on and it must go on, as they say. With or without you. Believe me, I am not saying this to disappoint you or make you feel that you are not an important part of the team. It is just how the world works. Your employer and your colleagues will definitely remember you for your contribution but won’t it be naive to think that they can’t go on without you. So, trust in your decision and do not feel guilty about leaving them.

You won’t be able to enjoy your last few days at work

You have enjoyed good terms with everyone around at work and there’s no point in ruining it at the last minute. If you keep on burdening yourself with guilt and overthinking, the last few days at work will get stressful and might as well be unbearable for you. It is not worth it. Let go of the guilt. Think of it as the end of a beautiful chapter where some things worked out well for you, and a few did not. But all along, you learnt a lot. The learning will support you in your new job.

We all seek happiness in our work for work fills a major part of our life. If it does not make us happy, how long can we carry on? If you want to explore better career opportunities, do not hesitate. Feeling guilty about quitting your job will only hold you back. If you have decided to quit and take up another job, do it. Communicate it gracefully to your employer and go ahead. The future awaits you!
