This goes without saying that the traditional models of working have undergone a paradigm shift due to the corona outbreak. Globally, almost everyone had to adapt to a new way of life with remote working. The uberization of work has been the foundation of the gig economy with specific pros and cons. With digitalization, the gig economy strengthened and became an intrinsic part of our society. The idea has been debated for quite some time owing to the impact it might have on society and employment. All this had been a part of an alternative model until recently when a novel strain of virus pushed us all towards the new normal. In a very interesting take, Mr. Josy John talks about the uber model of work post the COVID-19 pandemic.
Traditional work models have already undergone a change in this millennium with new businesses adopting the work from home format for the majority of the staff.
Covid19 has accelerated the work from home concept to more organizations and many are getting used to the concept and have adjusted to this new reality.
What next for organizations already in Work From Home pattern and long term growth and sustainability?
With the reduced availability of work due to the disruption of established work patterns, cost reduction will be uppermost in the strategy for survival and growth.
The uberisation of work will be a very common model. People possessing specific skill sets will offer their services on a platform- there are some sectors already in this model and aggregators are advertising these services on their platforms.
Technology companies now employing thousands of employees on their payrolls, will start looking for people with specific skill sets who will be hired for a specific number of work hours for delivery of a project without having them on their payroll.
The smart worker who takes up the challenge of being a UBER style worker will survive, hierarchies and titles will not matter anymore, only possessing the right skills and flexibility will improve your earning potential.
Will there be an uber model of work post the corona crisis is going to be an interesting development. Further, it has highlighted some aspects of the traditional models of working, where there is an immense scope of improvement. How about making full-time employment more flexible itself? What if corporates allow their permanent full-time employees the freedom to work when and where they like without the risk of going hungry or homeless? Just like the Gig economy is here to stay to suit a digital age, the corona pandemic has made us all realize that remote working is not that a huge challenge.
